Many years ago I aquired a deaf Dahlmation when he was 3 months old. I asked about training classes for handling a deaf dog and there weren't any available. But the trainer I was speaking to used to have a deaf dahlmation and she gave me a couple good pointers. First she told me that since dahlmations were snappers by nature that to condition him whenever he had his back to me or was asleep I should stroke him as I walked by. That would keep him from being starttled and then snapping in response. I must have over-done the training because during his 17 years on this earth I could walk up to him when he was asleep and whack him on the back of his head and he would just open one eye and give me a dirty look then go back to sleep. He also figured out that when I flipped the back porch light off and on it was time to come in. This started with using a flashlight to get his attention. Of coused this only works at night. I also got a book on basic sign language and taught him "no" and "sit" using hand signals. If I can be of anymore help just let me know. Pat Smith

You would want to find a trainer who uses hand signals, according to a friend who is a vet. She said generally what dogs hear is just blah blah blah anyway. There are many trainers who can work with hand signals.

I have had many deaf dogs in my training classes and they typically do very well. We do teach them using handsignals and treats as a reward. I have group classes so they learn to not be afraid around the other dogs. If you would like more info email me thru my website: www.shamrockdogs.com and I would be more than happy to help.

I had a White deaf Boxer and the Trainer who I used was K9 Advisor. there phone number is 7864193647. If you you do not live in Dade or Broward county contact them. They have been in business for quite some time and may beable to refer somone in your area. In less than 30 minutes they trainined my little girl not to run out of the house and to walk on the leash with me.

Hi there. My dogs are not deaf but they understand some hand signals just from practice. To put my dogs in the sitting position I point one finger to the floor in a clear gesture. To put them in the sit down positon I push my palm to the floor. Maybe you could try your own hand signals that suit you? I hope this is of some help and best of luck! Let me know how you are getting on, I notice you posted this a while ago.
